The Appalachian Institute for Renewable Energy (AIRE) is a non-profit organization that works with churches, schools, local governments and other community groups to help them develop and own renewable energy systems. AIRE helps identify investors in the community and assists them in forming an LLC that owns the system and receives a modest return on investment. After 5-10 years, when the system is paid for, the LCC donates or sells it at a fraction of its cost to the community institution, which then receives 100% of the benefits. AIRE has shown potential for replicability as it has successfully completed four projects.
