The City of Houston is working with the federal EPA on a pilot project to turn a former brownfield into a renewable energy generating site. In partnership with the US Sustainable Business Council and the private energy company NRG, the project will generate over 12,500 kilowatts of energy, about 1 percent of the city’s energy purchasing. The project is expected to spur a local market for solar energy systems and create jobs in the renewable energy field. In addition, project implementation will reduce the city’s greenhouse gas emissions by providing an alternative source of power for municipal operations.
